It was a busy morning for the children in Year Three and Four today as they were joined by a host of parents who were all eager to find out more about the way which we teach maths at Earls Hall! The morning began with the parents gathering in the downstairs hall where Mrs Crouch explained to them about the progression of our maths scheme and how the children expereince a sequence of lessons in the hyear groups. They then joined the children in class where they worked together to investigate ways to calcualte area. It was once again lovely to have the opportunity to have so many grown up learners with us, thanks to everyone who made it along to join in the fun!

Meanwhile, it was an exciting day for the children in Year Two today as they were transported back in time in order to investigate the events of the Great Fire of London! Travelling back in time to 1666, the children met Mary Porter who retold her own experience of the historic event. The children then role played people who lived during the fire and became bakers, grocers, butchers whilst imagining being in London when the fire begun. They acted out being the actual fire with props and dramatic music, met Samuel Pepys and listened to his diary entries describing the fire, played games where they bowed to the king, recited rhymes such as ‘London’s Burning’ and acted out special actions, built London Bridge and caught the plague! Throughout each session the children asked Mary lots of questions and recalled their own facts about the fire which they had already researched. The session by ‘Portals from the Past’ was paid for by our wonderful PTA, thank you! Thanks to all of the parents who sent the children in dressed brilliantly for the day so that they could really get into the spirit of the day!

Out of the front of the school, the children in Oak used their Foresst Friends session in order to take part in a series of class team work challenges. They worked together to find ways to keep a mouse warm in a nest using different materials like straw, material, plastic, cotton wool and also hasd to build a bridge out of brancehes and sticks which was strong enough to hold a bottle of water.
