It was a busy time on the playground at lunchtime today as groups of children enjoyed playing with our new giant chess set. As part of our OPAL provision, the set couldn’t have arrived at a better time as the grand final of the Earls Hall chess tournament takes place in Beech class tomorrow lunchtime. Children who are already familiar with the game took the time to share their knowledge with those who were new to the game and a great time was had by all. Elsewhere on the playground, the children continued to enjoy using the tyres and wooden scaffolding planks to create amazing obstacle courses!

In the afternoon, as groups of children from Robins enjoyed playing a series of PE games with Mr Crooks in the upstairs hall, the children in 6M took part in a science lesson where they developed their understanding of electricity and explored circuits. They recalled what they could remember from previous lessons and learnt new symbols used when recording electrical circuits. They then created circuits with the aim to turn the light bulb on.

Meanwhile, down the other end of the corridor, the children in 6J continued to investigate rivers. They identified where the river Thames starts and it’s journey from the source to the mouth. They then added photos of each stage onto a map and colour coded the course of the river. Down in 6CW the river theme continued as the children used non-fiction books to research rivers as part of their readiness for writing non-chronological reports on the subject next week.

As the children in the Foundation Stage enjoyed playing with their new low level climbing equipment in the garden, the children in Owls created their own tally charts in order to gather data information about preferences based on a series of subjects that they were interested in.
