The downstairs hall took on the feel of a busy market this afternoon as the day of the ‘Healthy Food Challenge Fayre’ arrived!
At the beginning of the term the children in our Foundation Stage and KS1 classes were challenged by top Southend United player, Adam Barrett, to design, prepare and sell a healthy snack. the snack which was deemed the most popular will be prepared for the team and so today the climax of the challenge took place.
Each class had carefully promoted their product by placing posters around the school and many had composed jingles to perform in the hall to catch potential customers attention. With so many songs being sung to tempt the children the hall sounded very noisy but the children gained a strong senses of the power of advertising and how it can influence consumer choice. To add to the competitive feel of the afternoon many children wore sandwich boards advertising their stall. For the first time, this year children and teachers from Year three joined on the fun by visiting the fayre.
Each child was permitted to spend up to £2 at the stalls of their choice and with so many tempting treats to choose from business was booming. Hedgehogs sold healthy wraps whilst Dormice offered ‘Mega’ fruit kebabs. Robins sold fruit jellies whilst Squirrels offered pitta bread pizzas.
Rabbits prepared and sold cups of vegetable laced pasta, Woodpeckers sold fruit juice snow cones and Owls could barely keep up with the demand for their banana and yogurt lollies! Badgers created and sold healthy balanced butterflies- butterfly shaped bags full of healthy fruit and veg whilst Foxes offered their fruit biscuit bar.
As the afternoon progressed the children had to handle more and more cash. they were challenged to add the coins and give the correct change. A good understanding of money will continue to tomorrow when each class will have to calculate the total profit made on their stall by adding together the total amount of money taken before deducting the cost of the goods needed to prepare their treat. The winning snack will be announced tomorrow in what is sure to be a tense final announcement!
