It was an exciting start to a new week at Earls Hall, particularly for the children in Year Two as they took part in a fantastic ‘Great Fire of London’ day! The children followed up their recent research in class about the Plague to find out about the Great Fire of London. Annie from Freshwater theatre engaged the children through drama as they acted out being ill from plague, dancing around like flickering flames, pouring on water and greeting King Charles II.

Annie was impressed by the facts they already knew and she was wowed by the questions they wanted to ask. The children went on to learn about how the fire started, the jobs that people did, what life was like in Pudding Lane and why the fire spread so quickly. She role-played Mary Porter, Samuel Pepys, king Charles II and Sir Thomas Bloodworth. As she retold the story of the main events, the children had a fun, interactive and educational experience and Annie was very complimentary about how enthusiastic, well-behaved and knowledgeable the children were. She said that we had a lovely school with lovely children.

Today’s activity has set the ball rolling for children to continue their enthusiasm for learning about and working on the Great Fire of London. Well done to all of the children for getting into the spirit of the day and for all of our parents for sending the children to school looking the part. Thanks to the PTA for funding the day.

Meanwhile in Sycamore the children continued to look at Heads of faith, today investigating Queen Elizabeth II and her role as head of the Church of England whilst in Year Three the children used their French lesson to orally discuss animals and family members.

Out on the field Mr Smith taught the children in to play cricket with some wonderful skills on display whilst Mr B enjoyed listening to children read in his office, today from Robins. The children were really enthusiastic and thrilled Mr B with their positive attitudes. Well done children, we are proud of you!
