It was an exciting day in school today! The morning started with an emergency in Owls and Badgers as the ‘Suffix Stealer’ was reported as having stolen words from Mr B’s new X Factor Winter song! The thief had left a series of incomplete words which the children had to write endings and beginnings to in order to correct, for example ‘sing’ became ‘singing’. A suffix is a letter or group of letters added at the end of a word to make a new word: The suffix “-ness” added to the end of the word “sweet” forms the word “sweetness”, changing an adjective into a noun. The children worked in groups and as individuals to complete the task and retrieve all the words from the naughty thief!
Meanwhile, in Squirrels and Woodpeckers, the children investigated the Gruffalo. The children thought of ways to describe the character, using each of his features to write a sentence which included a suitable adjective. The adults extended the challenge of the task by asking the children to join two descriptive sentences together with the conjunction ‘and’.
In Rabbits the children were learning about doubles. They used a doubling robot who generated numbers they had to calculate the double of. The children worked as individuals and in groups, using Numicon plates to help them visually see the double of each number.
In the afternoon the children in Oaks watched some night time videos and discussed how the experience would affect each of their senses. They then used charts to list what they could see, what they would hear, smell, touch or even taste and transferred this information into descriptive story starters.
There was much excitement in the car park this afternoon as the school took delivery of our swanky new minibus! The bus is the first of two donated by our amazing PTA and so it was only fitting that the committee were the first to check out our new set of wheels with Mr B and Mr Smith. The bus will be used to transport children on trips including sports events meaning that parents will no longer be required to arrange their own transport. Thank you to the PTA for all of their hard work and to all of our lovely families for supporting their events in order to raise the funds.
At the end of the afternoon the upstairs hall played host to an information session regarding the Year Six residential trip to Stratford Upon Avon, due to take place next year. Mrs Creak, Miss Ellacott and Mr B explained all about the activities due to take place on the trip, the accommodation and cost. The powerpoint will be emailed out to all Year Six parents tomorrow.
