It was a smelly afternoon in Elm this today as the children investigated the human digestive system in a particularly hands on way!

The children had previously identified the various parts of the system and labelled them on a map of the body, researching the various roles they play in digesting food and today they recreated the process of food turning to waste in groups.

The children put crackers into bags and added water to represent saliva, crushing it with their hands as if they were teeth crushing the food in order to make it easier to swallow. They then added orange juice to represent stomach acid breaking down the food further before they squeezed the squishy contents down tights to act as the intestine. The final waste was finally squeezed through a hole in a cup with some stomach churning results!

It was a fantastically fun lesson which all of the children enjoyed!

Meanwhile, it may have been a miserable day weather wise but that didn’t stop the children in Oak and Hawks enjoying their Forest Friends sessions. The damp weather was the perfect setting for the children in Oak to develop their shelter building skills. They worked in groups to make a log lean to, tarp lean to and ti pi shelters, working towards their next ‘ wild passport’ certificate. Hawks used tools and practiced half hitches again working towards there next ‘ wild passport certificates’.

Inside, the children in 6M continued to aft as graphic designers by creating their own food packages.
