Every corner of the school was a hive of activity today as the children took part in a fabulous Science Day! Throughout the entire day, each class focused on developing practical, investigative skills. The children across the school used the science skills of planning, observing, predicting and asking questions about what happened during their activities and there was a wide range of investigations taking place with volcanoes erupting, balloons propelling, eggs smashing (or not), electrical circuits buzzing and forensic investigations developing. Everywhere you turned there was a new investigation taking place and the children were incredibly enthusiastic as they carried them out. The children in Foundation Stage had been enjoying science throughout the entire week as a way to understand what an investigation is.

During the day the upstairs hall was the focus of a range of investigations where the children from Years One to Six were supported by Mr Sweeting and a host of volunteers from Southend High School for Boys who introduced them to scientific resources usually used at senior school.  These included a plasma ball, exploring series and parallel circuits, testing acids and base solutions, looking at cells under microscopes and being able to explore where the organs fitted on a life sized model of a human body. The children also had the chance to use the blender bike and to taste the end product. Mr Stanton, our chair of governors, came along to join in with the fun and classes also paired up during the day with a class from a different key stage to share what they had been learning during the day, talking about what they had learnt and enjoyed. It was a fantastic way to end the first week of the Summer term!  Thank you to Mrs Bowden, Mrs Matteucci and our Science Ambassadors for arranging the day.

Meanwhile, away from school, a group of children from across KS2 took some time away from science in order to represent the school at this years ‘Aquathlon’ event. The challenging event saw the children take part in a continuous two stage race, involving swimming followed by running and all of the children represented the school beautifully against other teams from across the city, coming in fourth place overall. Well done to Louis who finished in third place individually. Well done children, we are proud of you!
