It was an exciting start to the new term for the children today! The morning started with a special assembly for the children in KS1 and the Foundation Stage as the day started with the first of our platinum badges being awarded in the first ‘reading Champions” assembly of the term. Parents of gold and platinum badge recipients joined the children to see them receive their rewards for reading at home.
At the end of the assembly Mr B announced that the children had received a special video message from none other than Adam Barrett, top footballer at Southend United. On the big screen Adam told the children that the teams chef had been struck down with flu and that the players were in a desperate need for some healthy snacks as a result. Adam, a former Earls Hall pupil, asked the children to help him by designing, making and selling a snack. He explained that the most popular snack would be chosen as a winner and that the class responsible for it would be invited down to the club to prepare it for the players.
The children decided to set up stalls next week to sell the snacks and then spent the rest of the day investigating healthy food choices, balanced meals and interesting recipes that they could prepare.
In the KS2 assembly Mr B was helped by a number of volunteers to identify behaviour which identifies people as having good manners. the children talked about not only polite words to say but how to initiate polite conversations and even greet people when introduced with good eye contact and a firm handshake.
The afternoon saw the swchool welcome a couple of special visitors. Mrs Sullivan, Headteacher of Our lady of Lourdes primary school, and Mr Eastwood, Executive Headteacher of the Federation of Thorpe Greenways schools. Mr Eastwood was particularly interested in the progress the school has made over the last year as he is a former Headteacher of Earls Hall, serving in our former junior school between 2002 and 2008. Mr B gave them a tour of the school and explained the learning which was taking place in the various classrooms.
